If you read fashion magazines, you’ve probably browsed the editors’ annual list of classic items every woman needs in her closet. I find them rather unimaginative, so I put together my own based on the items I’ve found most useful in my closet as well as pieces that work for all my clients, no matter their age or shape.

  1. Motorcycle Jacket- in any color (black, brown, maroon, grey, even white), this item is the easiest way to add edge to any outfit. Pairing one with a dress or lacy top underneath will highlight this contrast. A note of caution: the simpler the better. Buckles, studs, zippers, anything Michael Jackson is overkill.
  2. Clutch- these bags can be worn day and night and look best in a skin (real or faux). Clutches and boyfriend blazers go together like peanut butter and jelly.
  3. Boyfriend Blazer- the simple navy blue J-CREW type is super versatile, sharp, and (like a motorcycle jacket) provides a contrast with airy, feminine pieces. In the summer, roll up the sleeves to elbow length and rock it with a fabulous cuff bracelet.
  4. Great Jeans- I know how trying it can be for women to find great jeans. For some, it can literally be a lifetime pursuit. When I find a pair that I love, I buy three. While the ubiquitious ‘no muffin top please’ advise is universal, I am limited in what I can recommend without actually seeing the jeans on you. However, if you can get away with skinny jeans, do. If you can get away with cigarette jeans that hit right at the ankle, do. I personally recommend Genetic Jeans and James Jeans.
  5. Pencil Skirt- girls with pear shaped bodies may think they can’t rock a pencil skirt. That is absolutely not the case. I’ve never seen a body look wrong in this skirt that epitomizes classic, understated chic.
  6. Statement Jewelry- whether it’s a cocktail ring, a cuff bracelet or a bib necklace, wearing one big piece of jewelry will become the focal point of your outfit. It’s also a great place to have fun and take risks you might be otherwise uncomfortable taking with your clothes.
  7. Fabulous Scarf- a linen monochrome or a cotton pattern are both super versatile and very functional, adding color (with a pattern) or texture (with the linen) to any outfit.
  8. Aviator sunglasses- Ray-Ban are the go-to brand, and if you want a more upscale pair, try Tom Ford.
  9. Flat sandals- There are so many ways to go with these (ornate and patent leather are my favorites) and so many ways to wear them. Just please keep toes looking nice.
  10. Anything patent leather- a bag, sandals, wallet, or belt. Try to get at least one item in this material.
