I have a small percentage of clients who require something in their ears in order to feel fully dressed. And if you’re familiar with my philosophy on accessories, you can imagine how I struggle with finding earrings that are stylish but not too stylized.

Many gravitate toward diamond studs but don’t clean and polish them so they wear well. Pearl studs are lovely but suggest a classic, even preppy sensibility that doesn’t work with all outfits.  CZs (cubic zirconia) lack imagination.

These studs (pictured) are the ideal everyday piece for the earring-dependent. Also available in rose gold and rhodium plated, they are reminiscent of the Cartier’s LOVE collection but without its steep price tag. In other words: perfect.

There are few absolute superstars in the boot world, and to qualify, one must be: stylish (duh), durable, and affordable (relatively speaking).*

I discovered Fiorentini & Baker at Barney’s Co-op around 2004/2005. An inconspicuous brown wedge boot that came to mid calf and zipped up the side, it became one of the best footwear purchases of all time. This boot sustained NYC walking and Boulder rain and snow, all the while looking great and feeling comfortable. They haven’t recreated that boot in many years and I wish they would; I had to finally retire my F&Bs last year and nothing has come close to replacing them**.

Local shoe purveyor Two Sole Sisters has just brought Fiorentini & Baker to Boulder. Their collection encompasses 5 different styles (including the one pictured), and they are flying out of the store. If you’re interested in picking up a pair, don’t wait!

*Many might balk at the $500+ price point, but boots are an expensive category, and for what you’re getting, the price is more than appropriate.

**I tried this past Winter with Prada Sport and not even close.

Selective Upgrading

Fall shopping with a client yesterday, I was reminded of an important style lesson, one that often gets lost on those who are finite in their buying decisions: the importance of selective upgrading. Selective upgrading occurs when you already own an item that works (a black handbag, blue skinny jeans, it could be anything), but find one that works better. While I’d like to promise that I can find any client the be all/end all for each and every piece, I know that’s impossible. I am meticulous in my buying and even I still upgrade because, simply put, not everything is available (or affordable) when you need it to be.

When you’re in a store and see that piece*, buy it. Buy it and part ways (by consigning) its predecessor. Never settle for ‘good enough’ when you can have ‘best ever’.

*In the case of my client, the best version of a black blazer- Helmut Lang.
