It’s difficult to get excited about certain pieces of furniture, and I put dining chairs into the ‘meh’ category (especially considering the typical price tags attached). Unless you’re splurging for a mid-century icon or going in a different direction all together*, there isn’t a ton of inspiration in this category. Which is why I really like the Tucker Chair, available here in five different colors (as well as black and white) and a very attractive price point. Order a custom cushion for added comfort and style.

*Reclaimed wood benches are replacing chairs in many stylish dining rooms.

When I moved to Boulder in 2009, the economy was still shaky and many local businesses were reeling from the financial crisis of the prior year; some closed, others were on the brink, and it took a while for our town to recover. But Boulder is back baby! New stores are popping up all over, and leading the pack is the amazing contemporary boutique Willow.

Willow is the collaborative love child of owner Andrea Resnick and creative director Heather Seeley and speaks to their different styles (the former classic, the latter edgy). This synthesis is a collection of modern sophistication, a mix that is unique yet wearable. Resnick and Seeley envisioned the space as a destination store, lovely and inspiring for its female shoppers and accessible and comfortable for men and children.

And they succeeded. Hoping for a design that is unexpected, organic, and refined, the space is spectacular with brushed oak floors, wrap-around limestone wall, industrial lighting, and a Willow branch installation in the window. The bathroom is nicer than what most people have in their homes and the dressing rooms are spacious and stylish.

Willow’s wares mix trendy (color blocked tunic, leather dresses) with classic (white blazer, denim buttondowns), established lines (Tibi, Closed, Catherine Malandrino) with up and coming designers (RVN, Benjamin Jay, Doma), fan favorite denim (Genetic, DL 1961, Current Elliott), and the necessary basics (Monrow, Sen, Tart). Supplementing the clothing are bags and shoes, jewelry across all price points, gifts for the home and hostess, and a kid’s corner (coming in December).

Are you seeing it yet? Willow is the real deal and a gift to the Boulder fashion scene. The friendship and creative synergy between Heather and Andrea breathes life into the store and into Boulder. Mention this post and receive 10% off your purchase, marking the beginning of, what I know, will be a wonderful relationship between Willow and Mile High Style.

Willow is located at 2595 Canyon Blvd, Suite 105.

Bookshelves, both freestanding and built-ins, can be so much more than merely a shelf.for.books. Consider transforming yours from functional into fabulous with the following:

1. Books- Pick those the mean the most to you from all categories (hardcover, paperback, vintage, coffee table, etc.) and, on each shelf, stack them- some from the left, others to the right, some in the center. The goal is for an unexpected yet balanced presentation.*

2. Photos- Framed photos help make your bookshelf personalized. I recommend simple sterling frames in all different sizes.

3. Baskets- For households with young children, baskets are the perfect way to populate the lower shelves that are within reach of small, curious hands. Even without kids, they add texture and break up the monotony that can result from too much of the same thing.

4. Objects- Cool objects add the finishing touches: candles, vases, rock geodes, art, greenery, bowls, and sculpture are among the items I utilized for my client’s bookshelf (pictured).** Place as bookends, atop a stack, or (for very special pieces) stand alone.

5. Light- Installing lighting into a built-in (with the help of an electrician) adds the piece de resistance. I recommend any of the Edison bulb pendants from Restoration Hardware.

*I’m not gonna lie- this is much harder than it looks. Practice stacking on a few shelves, step back and examine. If you don’t get it on the first few times, keep playing.

**Again, proper presentation takes practice. Bring an editing eye and when it doubt, take away!

Hanging pendants have replaced sconces as the de rigueur lighting for luxe bedrooms. Restoration Hardware, known for their vast selection of industrial-style lights, has a few pendants that would look badass in a bedroom. While it’s definitely a departure from the classic option, it’s an inspired choice if you’re looking for a little more drama.

A Quick Bit On Budget

As you’re planning your Fall shop and available budget, keep in mind that the colder months are the expensive ones, in the form of more materials (higher necks, longer sleeves), pricier textiles (cashmere, leather, shearling), additional items (jackets, coats) additional accessories (hats, scarves), and footwear (tall boots). As a general rule, I tell clients to add 1/3 to their seasonal budget to cover the higher price tags.

If your budget is immutable, then consignment is definitely the way to keep quality high and prices low.
