Pottery Barn’s Summer sneak peak is available online, and I am obsessed with this Palm (Beach or Springs) sheet set. Those of you familiar with my interior design philosophy know the importance of humor; guest rooms (bath and bed) are the ideal place to make these statements, as they’re separate from the main living quarters and not in use every day.

These sheets aren’t ‘ha ha’ funny, but they’re campy/kitschy. They add personality and, by the gesture, warmth: the perfect way to make a guest feel at home.

Determining your individual, personal style can be a deceptively difficult task, as the simplest questions are often the most complicated to answer. The following are a few of the factors influencing why we dress:

Location– Where you grew up can have a pronounced effect on your style preferences. From different time zones to coasts to countries, you may be surprised to recognize how regional style signifiers continue to inform your taste.

Time– Not surprisingly, when you were born has a strong effect on later style preferences. However, this correlates less to the year or decade of your birth and more to the period of impressionable growth. We absorb our first culture like a sponge and are reacting to it for the rest of our lives.

Experience- This shapes your perspective on everything, and how it relates to personal style is no different. Possible influences can be anything from a trip you took, to a person you loved, to a movie you watched. In my house, Rear Window played often and Grace Kelly’s gorgeous costumes imprinted in ways I would only realize decades later.

What if, after examining all your biographical and cultural influences, you are still unable to identify your style? It’s really not a problem. If your presentation is age-appropriate and inspired while reflecting smart buying choices, thoughtful pairings and contrasts, and your own confidence… You’re exactly where you need to be.

I’ve never believed in keeping a good thing all to myself..

I can’t take credit for finding this gem. My esteemed colleague in style, Jessica Helson of Chelsea, gifted me this lipstick after reading that it, quite miraculously, looks amazing on everyone. And if you’ve been paying attention to the Spring fashion ads, you’ll recognize it as the color of the moment.

A bold lip functions the same as great jewelry or a scarf, red nails or a hat ; it’s the finishing touch on your look, the memorable detail that transforms good to great.

It’s hard to get excited about rugs. As a child, I happily accompanied my mother on shopping trips, but when it came to rug shopping, I was dragged.

For one thing, the sheer volume of options feels very overwhelming. For another, as something that lays on your floor and gets dirty, rugs are expensive! These factors often compel me to opt for (eternally chic) cowhide throws and call it a day. That said, this metallic suede & hemp rug combines earthy and natural with a hint of glamour for an easy yet inspired flooring option.

Leave it to J.Crew to get it exactly right…

I’ve spoken about mixing prints before, specifically that stripes are a great neutral print to pair with something bolder. From the newest catalogue, J.Crew demonstrates how to take that one step further: with a third print.

The key aspect to pulling off this look? Simplicity. Each silhouette is clean; there are no superfluous details, and accessories are kept to the bare minimum of red nails and a single bracelet. And while paisley is not my particular thing, there is no doubt that this look is good style: balanced yet boundary pushing.
