Seafoam is back, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier.

Early experiences have a funny way of coloring our later thoughts, feelings, and preferences about fashion. Watching Rear Window as a child, out of all of Grace Kelly’s spectacular outfits (chosen by the legendary costume designer Edith Head), her seafoam green suit made the biggest impression. Years later, I would be drawn to that color, first on my friend and style mentor Katie’s gorgeous Catherine Malandrino silk draped top, then on one of Balenciaga’s earliest motorcycle bags. My clients may remember me pulling the rare piece in this color and gushing (as I am prone to do) about its elegant appearance and limited availability… Although with this new season, availability is no longer an issue.

Trends reconnect us with past loves. Whether it’s an entire look of an era (like 70s-style secretary blouses and trouser jeans or 40s day dresses and red lipstick) or singular pieces of the past (neon or pastels), their re-emergence allows us another chance, not just to own but also to wear in your individual way.

In anticipation of next season’s looks, over the next two months consider bringing in the foundation pieces: Spring denim. You’re going to need:

*Denim shorts– As critical as jeans in establishing the *casual chic* look, jean shorts are also available in nearly as many styles and washes: Colored, distressed, and boyfriend are all winners, and making your own cutoffs is always encouraged. Remember to start long and see how they look rolled once or twice before cutting any shorter.

*Colored denim– One easy place to successfully work the pastel trend is in your jeans. Keep everything else very basic and contrast the soft color with a rustic brown sandal or wedge.

*White jeans– Everyone’s favorite, right? If you feel comfortable wearing these, it will (most likely) take you a                                                              while to find the perfect pair, so you better start looking                                                                now!

There are few indisputable facts in the style world as most everything is subjective and context specific. However, seemingly immune from debate is that Jennifer Aniston Style has become among the most coveted and copied of all celebrities. According to magazines, red carpet performances, popular opinion and my own clients’ opinion*, she is the best. And while I don’t personally agree with this sentiment (I think she plays it far too safe for that body and bank account), for my own arguments sake, Jennifer Aniston perfectly embodies the Mile High Style philosophy: best basics and bold accessories.

If you scan through Google Images for candid shots of her (as opposed to Red Carpet photos where she employed a stylist’s help), you’ll notice that her outfits nearly always consist of jeans, tanks and t-shirts, with a scarf or jewelry, cool shades, and a great bag. And isn’t that what I’ve been saying? Good everyday style is about simple, impeccable basics, bold accessories, finished off with high(er) end footwear and a killer bag.

Once you’ve mastered this look and your style foundation is fixed and fabulous, you can then start taking more risks, making bolder fashion purchases, and having the confidence to pull them off.

*My clients all fill out a questionnaire prior to meeting with me; all unequivocally answer ‘Jennifer Aniston’ when asked which celebrity has the best personal style.

Somewhat surprisingly, flats are extremely difficult to shop for. On the one hand, not everyone looks good in ballets; on the other, not everyone likes the look of the loafer, the newest trend in flats. Finding a hybrid of the two that is affordable and available in multiple colors is no easy task, evidenced by the fact it’s taken me nearly two years to endorse one.

These flats have all the details I like (unique wood heel, structured body, available in patent leather and embossed skins), without any that I don’t (buckles, bows, rubber soles). Buy them in black patent for everyday, snakeskin for edge, and pink patent for fabulous.

Gentleman… It’s that time of year. First comes the Superbowl, then comes Valentine’s Day, and while most of us are evolved enough in our thinking to realize that this ‘holiday’ is a bit of a gimmick, it never hurts to receive something pretty.

Which brings me to you. If you’re still sans gift and have a stylish sweetie to celebrate, let me recommend this ring, along with a disclaimer: to your eyes, this piece probably looks a bit out there and perhaps quite different than what she’s used to. However, if she reads fashion magazines and blogs, loves shopping and uses the word ‘style’ as a noun and a verb, this ring is right.
