I bought the most beautiful Faliero Sarti scarf today and spent a good ten minutes in front of the mirror figuring out how to wear it. Wrapping a scarf can be a daunting undertaking. My best friend and perpetual style pupil (which has much more to do with her humoring me than actually needing any help) once mentioned my prowess with scarves, but it’s only because I play with them. There is no wrong way to wear a scarf. There is also no one way. There are better ways, cooler ways, more interesting ways, and you find them by playing. So give yourself ten mirrored minutes, an open mind, and you’ll see…

This is a pouf. It’s sort of an ottoman, sort of a stool and is a great option for additional seating, especially in a room that’s pressed for space. When not in use, put them on either side of a large piece of furniture (sideboard, buffet, bookcase) or flanking the fireplace (as I did in my old apartment).

As I’m searching the market for my first home to buy, I’ve come to prioritize the desired from the necessary from the won’t-pull-the-trigger-without-this. And this is good floors. Simply put, you can’t cheat with flooring the way you can furniture (case in point, only a small handful of people can tell the difference between a couch from West Elm versus one from Design Within Reach, a coffee table from ABC Home versus one found for $25 at a flea market) and decor items (I bet no one would know which of my platters are from Target and which are from Peppercorn). Flooring is the single biggest item in any house and (I think next to the layout and proportion of items in a room) makes the biggest impact.

So splurge on your floors. My absolute favorite is Herringbone, pictured here from my old NYC apartment; floors so beautiful, I would have slept on them.

Just A Tip: Bamboo floors have been all the rage for a while because they are ‘green’. Take it from someone who has lived with them for two years: they mark if you so much as look at them wrong. There is nothing environmentally friendly about having to replace your bamboo floors every few years because they look like poo.

industrial-bathroom-cabinets-and-shelves

As I’m considering purchasing my first home, I have been contemplating master bath furniture. I keep coming back to the industrial aesthetic embodied in reproduced pharmacy cabinets. Since bathrooms typically have a feminine feel to them (especially if they’re designed by and for a woman), I think pieces like these add a slight masculine contrast that works well with the candles, and products, and fluffy white towels and all other female bathroom accoutrement. They also add a vintage feel, which never goes out of style.
