derby

One of the most anticipated events of the season is almost here; Boulder Lifestyle Magazine throws the best Kentucky Derby party in town (click here to buy your tickets!) and in preparation, I’ve put together a guide for how to dress for the day. Surprisingly, this won’t be a nod to traditional Derby fashion with frilly frocks and fabulous hats but rather a call for practicality and indulgence, which means: buy a fabulous dress you can (and will) wear again!

In the past 6 years of working with personal styling clients, it’s clear that most Boulder women don’t have a dress for every occasion. The perfect yoga pants? Check! The activewear that can go from a workout to dinner? Check! A dress for a Spring/Summer wedding or a school fundraiser party or a Mother’s Day brunch? Maybe not… The May 7th party is the perfect opportunity to treat yourself to the dress you want, deserve, and will repeat.

Willow: Boulder’s premiere boutique for modern sophistication, Willow carries Rachel Zoe, Halston Heritage, and new line Elliatt. Their racks are currently brimming with beautiful dresses by these top designers. Complete your outfit with a clutch by Claire V.

Christina’s: Known mainly for what goes underneath the dress, Christina’s Luxuries (in addition to the best undergarments in town) carries many fantastic fashion lines. Their Nicole Miller collection fits many different body types and will look as stylish and appropriate today as it will in 5 years.

Chelsea: One of Boulder’s oldest and most storied boutiques, Chelsea’s aesthetic is classically feminine. Lines like Plenty by Tracey Reese, Theory and Calypso St. Barth offer numerous options for dresses or, more boldly, jumpsuits and rompers! Make sure you finish off your outfit with jewelry by Denver designer Christy Lea Payne!

Common Threads: At Boulder’s best consignment boutique, when you score, you score BIG. If you’re shopping on a budget, J.Crew, Banana Republic and other big brands are available in near perfect condition for a fraction of the retail price. Those looking for top designers will score even bigger; I’ll be wearing the navy blue stretch wool Lanvin cocktail dress I found there for $250 when it retailed for well over $1000.

Giddy Up!

Liz01Without a doubt, the least enjoyable part of an otherwise totally kick-ass job, is telling clients that they need to be spending more money on their clothes, shoes, accessories. It seems to be part of the human experience to have hang ups about money; we all do. It also seems nearly universal to want to get the most for the least, and I am no exception to this preference. At different times, I’ve procured for clients, friends and myself $1500-$2000 handbags, nearly brand new, for $300-$400 from my favorite consignment store, Common Threads. When at all possible, I prefer to buy things very gently used and very deeply discounted. But that’s not always possible. A finite amount of merchandise at any given time does not always permit the possibility for these incredible steals.

As much as my services cater to styling my clients, they also cater to educating them. I want you to know what’s overpriced (Ralph Lauren), what stores provide outstanding customer service (Chelsea in Boulder), what accessories are really worth the splurge (shoes), what are the best items to buy at consignment (bags), where you can save (costume jewelry) and where you should not. So when I tell you and my clients that they need to be spending more money (in relation to what they have available to spend), please believe that I know what I’m talking about.

I speak more about this issue here. And keep this in mind when you’re considering the upgrades: I’ve never, personally and in my business, known anyone to regret spending more.

While Labor Day tends to signify the end of the Summer season, the retail world has been preparing for Fall since Summer began. And while you may be a few months away from incorporating wool and cashmere into your daily wardrobe, now is the time to start thinking about how to transition your closet and your style into the new Fall season.

TAKE STOCK- By far, the most important part of this transition is to have an accurate picture of what you already own: in the closet, the attic, the garage, your friend’s closet, etc. You would be amazed at how much is forgotten after only 6 short months and how many pieces are still sitting in dry cleaner bags, hidden at the back of your closet, and on loan. To determine what you need, you must first know everything you have.

EDUCATE- With stores showcasing all new merchandise, it can be difficult to pace yourself. Before buying a particular piece, pieces, or an entire collection, you must have a complete picture of what’s fully available for the season. The September Issue of all fashion magazines (on stands right now) is the biggest of the year and features all the looks, trends, and available merchandise of the next 3 months. Educated, informed buying minimizes the potential for buyer’s remorse down the road.

TRENDS- Navigating trends can become unnecessarily complicated. I’ve heard the term ‘on-trend’ used both positively and pejoratively; for some, it sells the piece and for others, it makes them run in the other direction. ‘Trendy’ is confusing and intimidating- it begs the question, ‘if it’s popular right now, can I wear it next year?’ Here’s everything you need to know about trends: screw them. For one thing, everything cycles and recycles, so whatever it is, it’s gonna return to vogue. Case in point: capes are back, as are over the knee boots- two styles have been ‘on trend’ within the last five years. Oxfords are hot right now as part of the Academic-chic look. I’ve been putting my clients in this style for years.Wear what you want and watch the fashion world follow.

QUALITY- Any new season advances the old issue of quality versus quantity and provides the opportunity to finally do it right. I am a fanatical proponent of investing in what’s well made and long lasting; clothing that may cost more in the short run, always saves in the long. So splurge on amazing knitwearkiller jeansbeautiful accessories, and perfect basics that will stay with you long after the season ends. I’ve never known anyone to regret spending more.

In the world of retail, certain truths are written in the stars: diamonds are a girl’s best friend, gold prices continue to climb (currently peaking at $1600/0z), and Brooke Gregson jewelry never goes on sale… Until now.

In honor of the re-launch of my website, Chelsea is generously offering an unprecedented 15% off and free shipping for Mile High Style clients on all Brooke Gregson merchandise.

There is so much that can be said about Brooke’s pieces (Zodiac, Planetary and Custom Collections), but perhaps the most compelling is this: they are as special and spectacular (meriting the splurge) as they are versatile and timeless (guaranteeing their novelty will not wear off).

This offer is good throughout the month of August. Buy online with code MHS15BG at checkout or in-store by mentioning this promotion.
