Liz01Without a doubt, the least enjoyable part of an otherwise totally kick-ass job, is telling clients that they need to be spending more money on their clothes, shoes, accessories. It seems to be part of the human experience to have hang ups about money; we all do. It also seems nearly universal to want to get the most for the least, and I am no exception to this preference. At different times, I’ve procured for clients, friends and myself $1500-$2000 handbags, nearly brand new, for $300-$400 from my favorite consignment store, Common Threads. When at all possible, I prefer to buy things very gently used and very deeply discounted. But that’s not always possible. A finite amount of merchandise at any given time does not always permit the possibility for these incredible steals.

As much as my services cater to styling my clients, they also cater to educating them. I want you to know what’s overpriced (Ralph Lauren), what stores provide outstanding customer service (Chelsea in Boulder), what accessories are really worth the splurge (shoes), what are the best items to buy at consignment (bags), where you can save (costume jewelry) and where you should not. So when I tell you and my clients that they need to be spending more money (in relation to what they have available to spend), please believe that I know what I’m talking about.

I speak more about this issue here. And keep this in mind when you’re considering the upgrades: I’ve never, personally and in my business, known anyone to regret spending more.

One of the biggest compliments I receive about my house is often not about how it looks but how it smells. Since discovering Antica Farmicista reed diffusers from one of the best stores on the planet (and a dangerous one to live near at that), rarely does someone pass through my front door without commenting.

The newest scent from this line, Coriander, Lotus & Cucumber, is sublime and available in numerous different products, though the reed diffusers provide the most bang for your buck.  Place it near the front door and enjoy!

Those of you familiar with Mile High Style are well aware of my insistence on smart splurging and adherence to quality over quantity. Nowhere is that more important than in the purchase of the investment piece: the ‘Big Girl Bag’.

Simply put, a Big Girl Bag comes from a top design house and typically retails for over $1000. $1000 seems exorbitant for a handbag and sets off all sorts of alarms of budget, principal, and limits. That is until I have clients add up all your $300 Coach bags, $500 MARC by Marc Jacobs bags, $75-100 random bags and so on. The math is compelling. You are paying $1000, well over $1000 for bags that are less versatile, less timeless and less fabulous.

The good news- You only need one. I don’t care what the editorials are telling you, these bags are appropriate year-round. Black leather can be worn in the summer, taupe patent leather in the winter. Additionally (and again despite the popular editorial nonsense), these bags don’t go out of style. When chosen correctly, a Big Girl Bag won’t be trendy and will be forever; for every day, for every outfit.

More good news? With websites like ‘Tradesy’ and ‘TheRealReal’ (and others I keep in a secret file), seasonal sales from every high-end department store (Barneys, SAKS, Bergdorf Goodman), and top notch consignment boutiques like Common Threads, sourcing a Big Girl Bag for 40-60% off the retail price is becoming easier and easier. If you buy at the right time and stay on top of online sales (or hire me to do this for you), $1000 gets you a $2000 bag.
