When I launched Mile High Style, I had to answer an important question: why would someone with great style, fluency in fashion, an organized and streamlined closet and a fabulous wardrobe need to hire me?

Without question, the majority of my client base consist of women who (admittedly) enter our relationship sitting below the fashion curve. Working with them, witnessing their transformations and helping grow their style IQ is truly an amazing and rewarding experience. How would I feel, and how could I help those who have a more advanced grasp on style and would it be worth my time and their money? Is there a place for this type of client? Absolutely.

No matter your placement on the style curve, I know that you still battle in sessions of clothing karate, still have pieces in your closet that can’t seem to find a home in any outfits, and still face the discrepancies between what you see in the mirror versus what everyone else sees. You could still benefit from your wardrobe seen through a new set of eyes, and the luxury of no longer having to ask ‘what should I wear today’.

I want women who already have great style to come out of your fabulous closets, in your best outfits, and let me show you a new look, present a different perspective, and infuse a new energy and enthusiasm into you, your clothes, and your life.

Accompanying the excitement of entering fashion’s sumptuous Fall Season (booties, burgundy, blazers, oh my!!) is the reality of increased costs on just about everything. Raw materials like leather and cashmere are more expensive than their warm weather counterparts, and the silhouettes require more materials. Part of the reason boots are so expensive is the sheer amount of leather used (ditto anything with sleeves or a cowlneck). When you’re looking at upwards of $800 for a fabulous pair of high end boots (about $500 for booties), any chance to save on the bottom line, without skimping on quality or style, is a gift from the Fashion Gods.

Frye is just that thing. From a classic tall boot, to a cool ballet flat, booties for fashion forward women to the perfect pair for men, you’re saving without sacrificing, allowing some budgetary flexibility for the big pieces.

True story- I was two hours into a outfit-making session with one of my loveliest clients. This was the second time I had been in her closet and, assuming I had seen everything but still feeling something was missing, asked if she had any silk scarves. Out of a box in the closet, she reveals, almost as an afterthought, an Hermes silk scarf.

I probably don’t need to tell you how much trouble she was in (lots) that it took four hours of working together and my shot-in-the-dark probing to uncover the single most important accessory in the history of fashion and style. Since her look (like most of my over-40 clients) centers around pristine basics accented by fabulous accessories, that single scarf literally changed the punch and power of many, many outfits. That is the force of an Hermes scarf.

I understand that $400 is a lot of money to pay for any item, much less a scarf. I also understand that there are birthdays, holidays and other special occasions; piggy banks, consignment stores and hand-me-downs. While I think $400 is nothing to pay for the best accessory money can buy, anyone should be able to acquire one for less. Wear as a belt with jeans, tie around the handle of a big girl bag, or sport the old fashioned way: around your neck. For you women over 40, the necessity of this item increases as you age, when sophistication and refinement [should] become the backbone of your look.

Available in countless amazing patterns (horses appearing the most frequently, a tribute to the House’s roots as an equestrian boutique) and every color of the rainbow, I recommend their signature orange. If you’re ready to buy, here is my choice for classic, here is my choice for modern, and here is my choice for very modern.

Over the last 4 years of working with clients and their closets, some strong patterns emerge, specifically regarding buying traps so many fall into, i.e. where women are wasting money. Without a doubt, the under $100 tops from Anthropologie heavily weigh the discard pile.

A disclaimer first. I like Anthropologie. I like that, similar to J.Crew, they have a strong style identity. They have cool and affordable jewelry, great jeans, some interesting shoe options and really terrific statement pieces from their higher end lines. For home décor, their vintage-inspired glassware, boudoir accessories and kitchen and bathroom hardware are fabulous.

That said, be cautious of the bread and butter of their line, the cute/boho/funky tops. For one thing, the quality is just not there. A few washes and the shape is gone, the decorative details (rouching, rosettes, embroidery, or lace) look messy, and your new top appears old and unattractive. You know I’m right. Look at your current collection and ask if any of the pieces resemble how they appeared in the store.

There is another reason why I discourage my clients from buying these types of tops: they are a style shortcut, a way around doing the work necessary to create a great outfit. Since the tops already have a ‘style’, many women simply pair them with jeans and think they have achieved a sufficiently cute look. I encourage my clients to aim much higher, combining at least 3 separate pieces (top, bottom, accessory) and work up to 5, 6, or 7 parts, all in balance.

Why can’t you still incorporate your Anthropologie tops into your 7-piece outfit? That’s simple. Because, as per their appeal in the first place, there are just too many details. When you start adding more and more elements to your outfit, the fundamental pieces must be basic and Anthropologie is anything but. Instead, save the money you would have spent on two or three $60 tops and splurge on one of their higher end pieces.

Finally, I specifically chose the photo above to feature my yellow plaid jacket. It’s from Anthropologie; and it’s evidence that great pieces are available with careful choosing and a bit of splurging.

Personal Color Chart

In addition to making clients look and feel fabulous, a big part of my job involves dispelling myths. Most unfortunately, many of these myths are propagated by people in my own industry, and one of the biggest involves the colors you can and cannot wear, aka personal color charts.

The true antidote to color consciousness is very simple and straightforward. Do certain colors look better on certain people? Absolutely. Should you base all your buying and styling choices around these colors? Absolutely not. The power of a great outfit lies in the entire presentation, how every detail works in balance and in contrast, and I guarantee that cream or grey against your face will not change or in any way diminish the overall look, assuming everything else is on point.

How does this translate to your buying choices? Remember that great style is about breaking down boundaries, adjusting preconceived notions, and thinking out of the box! Judge any piece by all its style properties, with color being just another one. Don’t pass on something beautiful and unique simply because it’s not ‘your color’.
