Epilogue: I am resurrecting this post from 10,000 ft in the air. Air travel has become one of the most unpleasant experiences and it seems that, in reaction, people bring their most unkempt selves to the airport. Instead, do your hair, wear a good outfit, keep your sunglasses on. Pay homage to the days when part of the destination was the flight there.

Photo courtesy of my mother, last on the left, former Pan Am stewardess.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but… When you dress up, when you put in the effort, people do too. At a restaurant when you want a good table (or any table at all without a reservation), at the airport when you want an upgrade, at a bar when you want free drinks, at a concert when you want special access, or at a store when you want better service, how you present (+ polite) is the key factor.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting wearing a ball gown to pick up bagels. But, when the situation begs (i.e. any time you are out to dinner) and you dress, you’re demonstrating a respect for who you are and where you are, that will, undoubtedly, come back in spades.

When it comes to building a shoe collection, I’ve learned to err on the side of versatile. My 20s were spent in search of heels that were fabulous, full of attitude, and totally impractical. Predictably, none accompanied me into my 30s. From the hot pink stiletto Blahniks (back when neon made another push into mainstream style), to the most ridiculous black patent and suede platform peep toe Louboutins that limited my mobility to 2 city blocks (on a good day), all remnants of my fantasy collection ended up in consignment. However, one pair of novelty heels remain: navy blue suede and raffia platform sandals from Prada’s Spring/Summer 09 Runway Collection. Every woman should own at least one pair..

Reminding myself that I already have that one, it took a lot of willpower to not order these newly reduced Miu Miu wedges. In terms of practicality, I advise sticking with a Summer shoe, one that won’t get damaged by cold weather elements and, among that selection, a platform wedge is the most comfortable. If the glitter finish is a bit too much, the same style is available in a more subdued brown leather.

For me, the best part about visiting New York City is the people watching. On a recent trip, perched in a prime window seat in the West Village, it was an overwhelming sight: people in New York City BRING IT and this Summer, they’re all bringing the chambray shirt.

I’ve been familiar with this look since it first started appearing on J.Crew’s website, but I was never inspired one way or the other. However, the amazing thing about fashion and style is context; simply seeing this shirt look so good on so many people made me re-think its value, both in my closet and in yours.

I think the power of this piece lies, not only in its versatility (and machine-washability) but also in its neutrality. In a season heavy on bolds & brights, the chambray brings it down a notch.

For the novice: pair with a bright skirt in on-trend neon and finish with neutral flats.

For the expert: bump up the intensity of your bottom piece, be it shorts, jeans, or (in fashion fantasy-land), this skirt.

Epilogue: In honor of the upcoming release of coffee table book extraordinaire, Fendi Baguette, I am resurrecting this post. My style mentor Katie was the first to acquire one of these babies right after Carrie Bradshaw immortalized it into fashion history. Black beading with a royal blue satin lining, it was spectacular. In the following years, I would follow her lead and buy 3 (I was a little excessive back then). Today, only one remains in my closet: midnight blue beading with a matching satin lining. I rarely have occasion to bring it out, but when I do, it’s always special.

Remember that the truly special bags, the iconic bags, never go out of style.

Do you own any variations of the following bags?

blogposts_bag_lady

If you do, it’s probably not gonna come as a surprise that you own an ‘It Bag’. Chances are, you probably remember when, where, and how you came to possess the bag of that moment. With a few exceptions (Balenciaga and Chanel, mainly), you probably can’t remember the last time you carried your It Bag (if you haven’t yet sold it).

Readers of this blog know of my distaste for rules, and this sentiment extends especially to trends, and in this case, these bags. The reason It Bags come and go with such ferocity is due to overexposure. People get sick of seeing the same bag on every other woman on the street; Owners of these bags get even more sick of something they have to see every day. So they get put away, often sold, a reminder of a relationship that has run its course. New bags come into vogue (Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent and Goyard all had big hits in the last 5 years), more money gets spent, but you find yourself in the same situation again: saddled (pun intended) with something you’re not sure you is still relevant, appropriate or chic.

Screw.That.

In fashion, re-invention has a long and fabulous history. Trends cycle, styles get resurrected, done becomes chic again. All that you need to bring your bag back, is you. Pair your best new outfit with your (old) favorite bag and show other women that it’s okay to bring these bags out of the closet.

One of the most popular items for warm weather months can also be among the more difficult styles to pull off. Colored denim re-emerges every Spring as a welcome change, but one with a condition: with very few exceptions, the fit of colored denim is cigarette (aka toothpick) or skinny. Many pear-shaped women who aren’t as comfortable with this style or those who simply prefer a looser feel, will be out of luck.

The solution is a colored denim jacket, like this coral Pilcro from Anthropologie, which pairs as well with your blue jeans and a tank as a neutral summer dress. Remember that jean jackets are supposed to fit snug to the body, so buttoning them up is not necessary.
